Holiday Shopping & Retail Theft

My fellow San Franciscans,
Our officers are out there every day doing their jobs, and we are seeing results in recent strategies targeting organized retail theft and auto-theft break ins. This includes 40 organized retail theft operations since last year that have resulted in 300 arrests. For example, this week SFPD led an enforcement operation targeting organized retail theft and successfully arrested 17 adults in a single day at just one store.
This work is paying off:
‧ A Council on Criminal Justice study showed that retail theft incidents in SF decreased 35% by the first six months of this year.
‧ On Thanksgiving weekend – the kickoff for the holiday shopping season -reported citywide larceny theft incidents were down 75% from last year, and 80% from 2021.
As we head into this year’s holiday season, it is important we sustain these efforts to ensure we keep it safe for our shoppers, workers, and visitors.
Small Business Shopping this Holiday Season
The beginning of the holiday shopping season is an invitation to residents and visitors to invest in our local economy. I encourage our residents and visitors to shop locally at small businesses, dine at world-class restaurants, and enjoy museums and other unique cultural experiences in San Francisco.
By pledging to shop and dine in San Francisco, we can help ensure this time of year is crucial for small businesses across the City.
Shelter Bed Expansion
Earlier this week, we announced the expansion to our shelter bed availability by adding 300 new beds. San Francisco now has more than 3,850 beds active in its system, with more are coming online by the end of this year and early 2024. Since 2018, we’ve expanded shelter capacity by over 60%.
These shelter beds are essential to help people get off the street, and for our outreach workers to have ready to offer as they go out to bring people indoors and clean up around encampments. These beds are critical in our work to make sure San Francisco’s streets and neighborhoods are clean, safe, and welcoming.
