Update on Downtown Recovery, Small Business and Public Safety

My fellow San Franciscans,
Throughout the month of February, San Francisco is filled with vibrant Lunar New Year celebrations across all corners of our neighborhoods. Thank you to everyone who has been working so hard to organize all of the festivities across the City. And Congratulations to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce on a successful parade last night. As we ring in the Year of the Dragon, which symbolizes progress and strength, we will continue our work to support our priorities:
A Healthy Downtown Benefits our Neighborhoods
In 2023, I launched my Roadmap to San Francisco’s Future to revitalize our Downtown and build on San Francisco’s continued success as an economic leader for our region and a global leader in new technology. The success of Downtown is critical for our entire city - our parks, libraries, buses, police officers and so many public services more are funded by a strong economy.
Our initiatives and programs under this roadmap are providing positive results – as of this year: Office attendance is up 23%, SFO is back to pre-pandemic levels, and nearly 700 businesses are opening monthly.
As we adjust to changing work patterns, we can no longer rely on a 9 to 5 Downtown – we will work to create a 24/7 neighborhood with housing, universities, and arts and entertainment uses.
First Year Free Program Extended for Small Businesses
I have proposed extending the First-Year Free program, which waives first-year permit, license and business registration fees for new and expanding small businesses.
Since launching in 2021, First Year Free has waived fees for over 6,200 businesses. This, along with our reforms to shorten new business approval times through changes to our laws we’ve made, is making it easier than ever to open a small business here.
Progress on Public Safety Continues Through Coordinated Efforts
Our work to coordinate law enforcement and bring in more support from the state and federal government is making a difference in our neighborhoods.
In 2023, residents saw San Francisco’s lowest crime rates in the last decade, and this year we are continuing that progress. In January 2024, as compared to January in the previous year, results show:
‧ Property crime down 32%
‧ Violent crime down 11%
