Working to make sure Chinatown continue to shine

By Mayor London Breed

Thanks to the San Francisco Police Central Station and their collaboration with community-based organizations in Chinatown, the 8th Chinatown Night Out was a successful event where residents, public safety agencies and law enforcement organizations came together to share resources and safety tips. More importantly, they came together to get to know one another.

I was especially grateful for District Attorney Brooke Jenkins’s Office, Adult Probation Department, Self Help for the Elderly, Community Youth Center and Chinatown Community Development Center for connecting with so many seniors and families at their table, helping promote some of the critical services that they provide. It is of utmost importance to me that we continue to provide funding and resources for vital work around violence prevention, senior escort programs, and victim services so that our community feels safe when they are going to the doctor, picking up children from schools and buying groceries.

I know that our Police Department has done a tremendous job on advancing their important mission of engaging, serving and protecting our community and hiring police officers that represent the communities they serve is key to strengthening community – police relationships. This is why our budget invests in retaining and hiring officers to make San Francisco a safer City for all.

As Chinatown is one of the most important engines for our economy for both visitors and residents, we also need to make sure that this neighborhood is ready for the opening of Central Subway Chinatown Rose Pak Station. I know that our community has been frustrated with the delay of its opening year, but we are excited to see how this investment in transportation will connect the South of Market Area and Chinatown, bringing together friends and families from both sides of the City safely and efficiently.

With the support of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Federal Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, as the Central Subway is opening soon, we are already thinking of what comes next. We have more to do. More planning, more maintenance, more building. We have two funding priorities: we want to bring our existing Muni rail system up to the state of good repair after decades of disinvestment.

And second, we always want to have a subway under construction. Next on our list is the tunnel that will connect Caltrain and High Speed Rail to our Salesforce Transit Center. That connection is so crucial to the future of our city and our Downtown.

When we invest in transit, we feel the difference. It’s faster, it’s more reliable, and it’s a comfortable way to get where we need to go. It helps our economy, it helps our families and our seniors, and it helps our workers who rely on it every day.

As we plan for the future, we will make sure that Chinatown continue to thrive.
